What are Resin Identification Codes (RICs)?

Resin Identification Codes are a set of numbers (1 through 7) surrounded by a triangular symbol of arrows, used to identify the type of plastic resin used in a product or packaging.

They were developed in 1988 by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) (now part of the Plastics Industry Association) to help recyclers sort plastics more efficiently.

Please Note: The Resin Identification Codes (RICs) shown below are provided for informational purposes only and do not indicate that all items listed are accepted at this facility.

RICs identify the type of plastic resin used in a product—not whether it is recyclable.

Recycling acceptance varies by location and depends on local processing capabilities. For a complete list of accepted items, please refer to the information above.

1 – PET or PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate)

Common Uses:
Water and soda bottles, salad dressing containers, peanut butter jars, food packaging.

Recyclability:
Widely accepted in most recycling programs. PET is recycled into fiber for carpets, clothing, or new containers.

2 – HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)

Common Uses:
Milk jugs, detergent bottles, juice bottles, shampoo containers, grocery bags.

Recyclability:
Highly recyclable. Often turned into new containers, piping, or plastic lumber.

3 – V or PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Common Uses:
Pipes, clear food packaging, shrink wrap, medical tubing.

Recyclability:
Rarely accepted in curbside programs. Contains additives that can be harmful when processed.

4 – LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)

Common Uses:
Plastic bags, six-pack rings, squeezable bottles, bread bags.

Recyclability:
Not always accepted in curbside bins but can be recycled at specific drop-off locations (especially for bags and film).

5 – PP (Polypropylene)

Common Uses:
Yogurt containers, straws, bottle caps, medicine bottles, Tupperware.

Recyclability:
Increasingly accepted by recyclers. Recycled into signal lights, battery cables, and brooms.

6 – PS (Polystyrene)

Common Uses:
Styrofoam cups, meat trays, takeout containers, egg cartons.

Recyclability:
Rarely recycled. Brittle and lightweight, it often breaks apart and contaminates recycling streams.

7 – Other (Includes PLA, BPA, Polycarbonate, etc.)

Common Uses:
3- and 5-gallon water bottles, sunglasses, DVDs, some food containers.

Recyclability:
Depends on the specific plastic. Often not recyclable curbside and may require special handling.
